“People started telling me like, 'you're a girl, girls don't play football.'" says Julia Petry, a senior at Batavia High School in Batavia, N.Y., where she is the kicker and the only female on the varsity football team. "I got told that enough, and then eventually I was like, 'okay, I'll show you that I can do it,” she says. Petry, who started playing football as a sophomore, played five sports and held roles as the captain of the boys lacrosse team and the goalkeeper for the girls varsity soccer team.
