While many people think Maine’s lobster season ends after the summer, many fishermen, like Mike Garrity who fishes from Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island, fish year round with some seasonal differences. Garrity, who has been fishing around MDI for over 22 years, said “The most plentiful time is July to December first… and then all the lobsters end up moving offshore.” He fishes on his boat "Breakwater" two to three times every couple of weeks in the winter, compared to four to seven times a week during the main season. Garrity takes pride in being a full time fisherman with a Maine lobster fishing license. “I love being my own boss,” he said. “I got lucky enough that somebody signed off and I could get my license, because not everyone can.”
